Motorbikes In The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is a remote mountainous region bordered by Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.  Due to the rugged terrain of the region, the use of cars and trucks is highly problematic. Transportation in the region is usually by motorbikes or beasts-of-burden such as horses and donkeys.

Imported from China, motorbikes have become a popular form of motorized transportation in the Golden Triangle region.  Due to the low cost, versatility and small size, motorbikes have overtaken the beast of burden.  Unfortunately for the people of the region, like any machine, motorbikes require regular maintenance to function properly.  Without proper maintenance, they will soon breakdown, leaving their owners without a means of transportation.  Returning to the use of animals is a costlier option.

In a region where there are not many mechanics who are capable of servicing and maintaining motorbikes, VNS is planning to train motorbike mechanics.  Can motorbike repair provide an alternative source of income to opium production?
